When I was in the fourth grade, the principal of my school,
Mr. R. O. Amason, entrusted me to stock and fill the vending machine in grammar school. I counted the money and accounted to him. The whole enchilada! He knew I liked snacks too! In the eleventh grade, he recommended me for my first "real" gig; a part-time job selling ladies shoes a la Al Bundy. Mr. Amason was my first authority/taking-responsibility/business mentor.
Thanks, Mr. Amason!

Roger Hoss (who was present my first day on earth), was a wonderful mediation, negotiation and hoss-sense mentor. Roger knew so much about so many things, I always said of him -- had he been alive at the time of Jesus birth, he would have been one of the three wise men. Later, when Jesus was rounding up disciples, he may well have chosen Roger. Like the Apostle Peter, he wasn't perfect, but he was a rock. Though he lived in Texas his entire adult life, we talked virtually everyday the last many years of his life. He was Texan through and through.
I regularly spent time with him there, and he with me in Mississippi. We might phone simply to talk about something as trite as a beautiful sunset, or wonderful meal. Deep stuff!
We talked heavy stuff as well, and enjoyed each others company immensely. He was a doer, encourager, and motivator. A few years ago, when I concluded eulogizing him at his funeral, 500-plus people erupted into spontaneous applause. Seems it must have helped explain him. Through Roger, I learned the value of a really close ally. Someone whose love and concern came through -- warts and all. Much of my old-fashioned horse-sense, art of mediation negotiation, and hoss tradin' came from a real Hoss named Roger. My teriffic mediation, negotiaton, and old-fashioned hoss-sense, tradin' mentor. Thanks Uncle Roger!

One fateful day, way back in the third grade, I took my first piano lesson. It was not the most exciting day of my life. It was, however, a day that changed my life. Over the next many years, Mr. Clyde Howell crammed everything he knew, in his exceptionally talented musical mind, into mine. I developed into a good piano student and a pretty fair pianist ... (and mother says), singer. I don't have a clue what I would have done without music in my life.
Clyde Howell -- A wonderful music teacher, coach, and mentor. Thanks, Mr. Howell.  See: www.billclarklive.com

In his younger days, my father, J. Kimble Clark, was high-energy -- all-out! Shook hands with such a firm grip that big men winced and lesser men shuddered and broke out in a sweat. Some fled.
Until he left home in his early twenties, he milked dairy cows twice a day -- by hand. That'll give youmemorable hand-shake.
Kimble had a big heart, lots of personality; and until well into his 60's, walked fast! Even when he didn't exactly know where he was going he wanted to be the first to get there. He was also the "song" director at my wonderful country church. He never liked to sing a song in its original key. So, all of us who played had to know how to modulate (play in a different key). Later, I learned -- life isn't always played in the original key. A terrific salesman and human being! He was my all-round mentor. Thanks J. Kimble!

Wish I could tell you about untold others. This is not the venue. Gotta write a book. I've already got the pages numbered. The first chapter will be entitled: Margaret- A little filly 'n quite a Hoss. That'll be about Margaret Elizabeth Hoss Clark . . . my mother.

I'm blessed to be surrounded by a beautiful family; a hard-working wife, three beautiful talented daughters, two handsome sons-in-law, and three gorgeous grands. How good can it get?

Now, in semi-retirement, and with a diverse background in sales, marketing, advertising, television, radio, print, hoss-tradin', dickering, and an in-born curiosity -- I'm putting it out-there.

I hope to share my experience and the the lessons I've learned along the way from others . . . with others!

If I can help, give me a call.

I doze but never close.
